CareerShift is a program available to all CSU students and alumni that allows you to search for companies by geographic region across the country. This is a great way to learn what companies exist in the industry you are interested, in the place you want to live. Once you find the companies, you can then research their individual websites to see what job opportunities they have available. Try it out here: http://www.careershift.com/?sc=colostate. All you need to register is your name, email address, and the group code "CSUCareerCenter."

Once you have registered, click on the "My Contacts" tab at the top to begin your company search. Be sure to at least specify an industry and a geographic region to narrow your search. If you have any questions about how to best use this site, feel free to stop by the Career Center walk-in office on the main level of the Lory Student Center to talk with one of our career counselors.

One of my students just pointed this blog out to me. The blog has a fun spin on recession proof industries and also contains some great career advice.

Once again I am referencing Penelope Trunk, because she does such a great job of telling people how it is. At the Career Center at CSU, we tell people this stuff over and over again so sometimes I wonder if I am dreaming it – is this really true that you should seek out the experience that matches the job you want? Yes! Even my favorite career blogger says it's true: http://blog.penelopetrunk.com/2009/02/05/how-to-beat-the-system-to-get-a-great-job/

Some of the key points she makes include the following actions:

  • Find a job description of a job you really want (that may take some researching so you get to use all those skills you are building in college)
  • Find a way to get the experience your dream job (or semi-dream job) requires even if you don't get paid for it
  • Look for resumes of people in positions you want (jobs that is) on the web and figure out a way to add their bullet points to your resume (ok not copying them but developing the skills to match the skills of those you want to be like)
  • Read recent DU grad's post about 5 Things She Wished She Knew in College: http://jessgoodman.wordpress.com/2009/01/23/5-things-i-wish-i-knew-in-college-that-would-help-me-network-today/
